Areyou involved inother
RCmodels likemodel
aircrafts?
I have about 27 odd aircraft, so
yes. I’ve been involved with aircraft
modelling since the age of five
whenmy father gavememy first
plane. It wasn’t RC (control line) but
marked the beginning. I became a
fully-fledged RC pilot about 12 years
ago and in 2008 I became a fix wing
powered flight instructor. Before the
tanks and after the aircraft were RC
stadium trucks. My son and I had a
go at indoor stadium truck racing.
I did a stint of full sized speedway
racing before getting into RC planes
again (back issues put a stop to that).
I thought that it might be cheaper to
get into RC planes. How wrong was I!
Whatmodelswouldyou
recommend for someone
just startingout in the
sport?
Likemost modellers, I will choose a
model because of its looks or past
associations. I can hear my fellow
clubmembers saying, “Get a Tamia”
others would be recommending Heng
Long (tanks). In short, Tamia if you like
to assemble, Heng Long if you don’t.
Holden-Ford, Pepsi-Coke, the reality
is whatever the heart desires, but
without a doubt to fully appreciate
what the heart desires get the best
radio control systemand components
that you can’t afford. I don’t think that
anything can change an opinion about
an RCmodel faster than a radio setup.
When it comes tomodelling it really
comes down to personal preferences
and no one should influence that.
However, that being said, when it
comes tomaking it work talk to those
who know and take notes. Get into a
club; other members are an
invaluable source of knowledge. Be
prepared that themodel you chose to
createmay not performas desired.
Fliers will know what I mean in the
formof true scale planes like the F4U
Corsair (also one of my favourites).
Be prepared to sacrifice form for
function or vice versa to get it to work.
Get it right and the joy is endless.
What’s your favourite
aspect of thesport?
Blowing things up! But seriously…as an
RCmodeller I love to create. Making
it all look and work realistically. Then
kicking back withmy fellowmodellers
who feel the same way.
