The prep work
“After reading several reviews
of glow style engines running
on unleaded fuels, my interest
was sparked to try a conversion
of a glow engine to run on 20:1
unleaded fuel. The promise of
better economy and less methanol
induced bearing changes seemed
too good to be true.
A little research proved that the
conversion was not only possible
but had been accomplished by
many modellers over the years
with seemingly little effort or
modification but for whatever
reason the exact setup and tuning
details were smoky at best. Easy
access to auto advance ignition
units makes the conversion
process almost plug and play. I
even found several local modellers
who were running similar
conversions on both glow and
unleaded fuels with promising
results. The only warnings were
about poor midrange carburetion
and heat control.
My aim was to set up my brand new
ASP 120 four stroke for testing, but
