What aSport!
The MAAA has secured sporting status!
Members of The Airsport Australia
Confederation, which includes model
aircraft flyers from the MAAA, have been
recognised as a sport by the Australian
Sports Commission.
This is great news for the MAAA’s elite
flyers because it means they are able to represent Australia as
sportsmen at the highest levels.
At a grassroots level, it also opens up funding through state and
local government grants for our local clubs, so they can apply for
funding and improve their facilities.
Promoting aeromodelling as a sport gives us new opportunities
to encourage more families and young people to become
involved in flying model aircraft.
Whether you’ve just started out in the sport or are a seasoned
top gun, model aircraft enthusiasts understand the blood, sweat,
skill and tears that go into competition at the highest level.
Queensland recently got a taste of the best of our sport when the
68th MAAA Model Aircraft National Championships were held at
various locations from Brisbane to the Sunshine and Gold Coasts.
With everything from aerobatic to combat models, aircraft
enthusiasts from across the country descended on the Sunshine
State and were spoilt for choice with gliding, control line,
helicopters and IMAC events held during an action-packed week.
Brendan Tucker dominated the F3C Competition, and Chris Callow
was at the top of the table in FA1 results after a huge build-up
to the Nationals on the Sunshine Coast and the event featuring
heavily in media and news bulletins.
